The invocatory verses in the form of slokas (Pasurams) eulogizing the greatness of the Acharyan or his Granthas (literary, spiritual or philosophical treatises) are called Thaniyans. Such Thaniyans have been composed for most of the Acharyas, each Thaniyan being unique in its nature.

One such Thaniyan has also been composed for our Acharya Rathnam Srimad Adhivan Satakopa Yatheendra Mahadesikan. When the scholars deeply analyse this seven worded Thaniyan composed in anushtup meter,   it seems that just as Shri. Valmiki Bhagwan composed the magnificent literary work Srimad Ramayanam, which is ever lasting and glorious like the Sun and the Moon and is widely acclaimed as Aadhikavyam, by starting with the sloka

Maa nishadha! Prathistaam Thvamagamach Sasvathee: Samaa: yath krounchamithunaadheham avathee: kaamamohitham

in Anushtup meter, a great grantham may also be composed in praise of this renowned Acharyan.

Prapadhye Niravadyaanaam Nishadhyaam Gunasampadhaam
Sharanam  Bhavabheethaanaam Satakopa Muneeshwaram ||

is the sloka, which  is the Thaniyan for that  great scholar. This Thaniyan is being recited so far by the Shrivaishnavites following the tradition of this Swami.

The reason for this being the fact that this Thaniyan is abound with the primary factors behind the concept of Pravruti (renunciation of worldly pleasures) viz. Vishayam (spiritual knowledge), Prayojanam (purpose), Sambhandham  (relationship) and Adhikaari (rightful person).

This Mahadesikan is an embodiment of spiritual knowledge. Bhagawath Kainkaryam (service to the God) is the purpose of surrendering at the benign feet of this erudite scholar. The Acharya-Shishya (Preceptor and Disciple) relationship is the Sambhandham. Adhikaaris are the persons who are dreadful of Samsaara (the vicious cycle of birth and death).

The word “Niravadyaanaam” elucidates the fact that as declared in the sloka “Kapalastham Yethaa Thoyam”, it is very rare to find blemishless unadulterated items in any store, but in this  great scholar, who is a storehouse/repository of all the noble virtues, it is not at all possible to see any blemished item (quality).

As propounded in the slokas such as “Sidhdham  Sathsampradhaye”, only all the noble qualities befitting the status of an ideal Acharya are found in abundance in this Acharya. These qualities may be present in some others also. But the word “ Niravadyaanaam” clearly highlights the fact that this Acharya is an embodiment of all such noble qualities and is absolutely devoid of any bad qualities whatsoever. The existence of these divine qualities of this Acharya have been established by some scholars time and again. Reiteration of the same would only be a repetition of what has already been stated.

All those noble qualities of this great scholar which are not known to people like us have been amply  covered by the word “ Gunasampadhaam”. This may be considered to mean that I with utmost faith and dedication meditate upon this scholar (who guides us to the path of salvation) by taking the sloka “Gruha Rakshaka Vachaka Sharana” as the path for the same.

The elucidation for this is that “I with utmost faith meditate upon Satakopa Yatheendra Mahadesikan, who is the Saviour for all those who are frightful of the Samsaraa, which is the manifestation of the dangerous cycle of birth and death and inculcates upon them the blemishless qualities, which would be their real treasure for attaining salvation”.

Assignment of these noble attributes to this great scholar is by no means an exaggeration. There is no need to say here that he is an embodiment of the noble qualities of Nammazhwar (Satakopa Muneesvarathvam). If we say so, it would only be a reiteration of the explicit.

As proclaimed in the shloka

Papishta: Kshathra bandhusya Pundareekasya Punyakruth
Acharyavadhdhaya Mukthou thasmaath  Acharyavaan Bhaveth ||

all can attain Moksha only through the Acharya- Shishya relationship.. Hence there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that only by reciting this Thaniyan  composed for our Parama Acharya (Supreme Acharya) with the meaning as stated above, we shall be able to get ourselves liberated from this Ocean of Samsaara and enjoy utmost bliss.

Note:  This invaluable treatise was authored by adiyen’s  revered father. This article was published in pages 324 and 325 of Shri Nrisimhapriya issue for the month of Aipassi in the year Vijaya.

In the same year in the Karthikai issue of Shri Nrisimhapriya, he has contributed a wonderful article viz.“Siraiyirundaval yEttram – Glory of the one who was in captivity” which won the hearts of all the readers.

Subsequently, in the month of Margazhi, he attained the Divine feet of the Lord. He, who had steadfast devotion in the benign feet of Injimedu Srimad Azhagiyasinger, attained Paramapada within a year of his Acharyan Srimad Azhagiyasinger  attaining the same, in order to continue to render services to him.

Adiyen’s elder brother and adiyen are very much proud for having been blessed to be born as the sons of this great soul.  Adiyongal have no grievance whatsoever due to the bountiful blessings of Srimad Azhagiyasinger, which are really a boon to our generation.

Although adiyongal did not have the privilege of rendering service to this great scholar, we derive supreme bliss from the fact that adiyongal have atleast been blessed with the privilege of rendering service to our revered mother.
