Shri :
Shri Lakshmi Nrusimha ParabrahmanE Nama:
Sri Malola Panchakam
श्री मालोल पञ्चकं
[Mukkur Sri Lakshmi Narasimhachariyar]
Upanishad proclaims “मातृ देवो भव“(MAtru DevO Bhava) It ordains unequivocally that one should treat his/her mother as God. As pronounced by the MahAkavi KAlidAsa in the sloka “श्रुतेरिवार्थम् स्मृतिरन्वगच्छत “ (shruterivArtham smrutiranvagacchat ie.Smruti follows the footsteps of Shruti), DharmashAstra, following the footsteps of Vedas, emphatically emphasizes the same point.
यथा मातरं आश्रित्य सर्वे जीवन्ति जन्तव:
तथा गृहाश्रमं प्राप्य वर्तन्ते इतर आश्रमा:
yathA mAtaram aashritya sarvE jeevanti jantava:
tathAgruhAshramam prApya vartantE itara AshramA:
Smruti thus highlights the fact that just as all living beings are dependent upon their mothers for their livelihood, all ashramams, which refer to four stages of dhArmic life viz. Brahmacharya (as a BrahmachAri or bachelor), Gruhastha (as a householder), VAnaprasthA (as a person living in retirement) and SanyAsa (as an ascetic), rely upon GruhAsrama (ie. Domestic life as a householder).
The glory of mother is eulogized by –
Maharishi by reciting “कौशल्यासुप्रजा राम” (kaushalyA suprajA rAma)
Shri KulasEkara AzhvAr in his hymn “mannupugazh kosalai than manivayiru vAiththavanE” (Oh Lord who was born from the pearl like belly of world renowned Kaushalya)
Upanishad by acclaiming “ब्रह्मण्यो देवकी पुत्र:”(“BrahmaNyO, Devakee putra:” ie. Oh, Brahman (the Supreme Lord), son of DEvaki)
Shri Vishnu PurAnam (widely celebrated as Shri PurAna Ratnam) by proclaiming “देवकी पूर्वसन्ध्यायां आविर्भूतं महात्मना” (Devakee poorvasandhyAyAm Avir bhootam mahAtmanA: ie. The Omnipotent Supreme Lord incarnated as the son of DEvakee).
Shri AndAl, extolled as soodikkoduttha nAchiyAr, expressing Her divine experience with Lord KrishnA, in Her proclamations in various hymns including the utterances “Yashodhai Ilangsingam (the young lion cub of Yashodha) and “Orutthi maganAi pirandhu Oriravil orutthi maganAi olitthu valara” (born as the son of one incomparable woman and brought up in hiding by another peerless woman)
Thus Shruti, Smruti, itihAsa, PurAnAs and AzhvArs’ Divya Shree Suktees (popularly known as NALAyira Divya Prabhandam) all profusely extol the greatness of mother. PramAna (प्रमाण्) which means proof or correct means of accurate knowledge and truths, emphatically declares that a mother’s love is incomparable and proclaims that- “न गायत्र्या : परो मन्त्रो न मातृ दैवतम् परम्” (na GAyatrayA: parO mantrO na mAtrudaivatam param) ie. There is no Mantra more glorious than GAyatri Mantra and there is no God more glorious than mother.
The agony of losing such a glorious mother is very huge. It is extremely difficult to live after such a calamitous grief. As adiyEn has been undergoing such an agony, adiyen is the only prime evidence (parama pramAnam) for the above irrefutable fact.
In this regard, there is a beautiful pasuram in KambarAmAyanam. In Citrakootam, on coming to know through BharathA the demise of DasaratA, the deeply distressed ParamAtma Shri RAmA lamented and started crying inconsolably. His wailing utterances included, interalia, the following-
thEnadaindha solaiththirunAdu kaivittukkAnadainthEn
ennath dhariyAdhu kAvala nee vaanadaindhAi.
Innam irundhEn nAn vazhvukandhE
voonamadaindha thevvaruir adaindha volvELOi
“Unable to withstand the news that I have left the Kingdom and reached the forest, you died. But even after knowing that you have died, I am still alive.” ( Where is your affection and where is mine?)”
In the same manner, adiyEn is also crying. Who will console adiyEn? Is it possible to recoup this irreparable loss? At this point of time, a voice reciting the superb Tamil pAsuram of ParakAlan (Thirumangai AzhvAr) “thAyE thandhai enrum thAramE kiLaimakkalendrum” is heard by adiyEn. Immediately, the darkness of ignorance vanished. AdiyEn’s thoughts started getting drenched in the ocean of the following kanimozhi (sweet language/verses) of SvAmi vEdanta DEsikan (eulogized as “ kaliyanurai kudi konda karutthudayOn” ie. Embodiment of the divine words of Thirumangai AzhvAr).
Payinmathi neeyE ! payinmathi tharudhalin
VeLiyum neeyE ! veLiyura nitralin
ThAyum neeyE ! sAla thandhugatthalin
Thandhaiyum neeyE ! mundhi nindraLithalin “
All relationships arising due to the current karmik birth of a person (birth arising due to the karma of the person) are liable for extinction. In this current birth as well as in all the preceding and succeeding births, our one and only eternally sustainable relationship is that with the Supreme Lord (ParamAtmA) who is aptly described as “Atmabandhu”. We are thus able to perceive that He and only He is the “Sarvavidhabandhu” He is the Father, He is the Mother, He is the Relative and He is all in all.
All these lead to the clear realization of the irrefutable fact that one should shower all his/her love and affection on the Supreme Lord, instead of bestowing the same on those with whom we have relationship only due to our current karmic birth. The fact that-
Father is not the saviour is unequivocally clear from the story of Hiranyakashipu.
Mother cannot be the saviour is obvious from the acts of KaikEyi
Brother cannot be the saviour is evident from the deeds of RAvanA
Husband cannot be the saviour is explicit from UtthAnapAdan’s episode
Friends and relatives cannot be saviours is evidenced by the trumpeting of the distressed Gajendra (elephant) for pleading to Lord Vishnu to save him from the clutches of the crocodile which had caught his leg.
Thus, all types of perennial eternal relationship is with Shree Lakshmiinrusimhan only and He is the one and only Saviour (SarvalOka Saranyan– Universal Protector). This irrefutable fact has been deeply entrenched in adiyEn’s mind by adiyEn’s divine mother, who had attained the Lotus feet of the Supreme Lord due to the bountiful blessings of Shri Injimedu Shrimad Azhagiya Singar. Overwhelmed by this eternal relationship between the Supreme Lord (as the Creator) and all His Creations (all animate and inanimate beings and things), adiyEn has been inconsolably crying for His divine grace. At that time, due to the abundant blessings of Shri Injimedu Azhagiyasingar, adiyEn had been rewarded with this Stotram. It is absolutely impossible to express in words the infinite compassion and grace of the Lord in having this stotram, composed in the everlasting memory of MAtru dEvathA, released on the divine occasion of 8th Shri MahAyagnam.
It is He who changed adiyEn’s thought of not performing any Yagnam for one year and made adiyEn to continue with the volitioned yagnams. It is absolutely certain that with the bountiful divine blessings and grace of the Lord, the revered AcAryas and all devout devotees, all the yagnams, starting with this 8th yagnam, would be performed without any obstacles/hindrances whatsoever. All those who recite this Malola Panchakam, which was bestowed upon adiyEn due to the infinite grace and compassion of the Lord to relieve adiyEn’s grief and grant eternal bliss, would get rid of all their miseries. They would certainly be cleansed of all their sins and blessed with all auspiciousness.
The meaning of this Stotram is as under-
